300 MB for 30$ (CAD) on a… BlackBerry plan.
Amanda wrote on the comments today :
I just called Rogers on the number you listed for the cancellations/retentions department. After a few questions back and forth, I chose to be up-front with the guy about the fact that I’ve already been running an iPhone since last September (!) on their “BlackBerry” plan. He offered the $30/month for 300MB plan and I took it. Most of my day I am close to a friendly wi-fi transmitter so this is plenty of EDGE data for me. Hope everyone else gets what they want, iPhone-wise… Cheers!
This could be a solution guys. What do you think?
July 1st, 2008 at 11:44 am
Solution? Right now the lowest iPhone plan gives you 400MB a month. Why would you pay the same amount of money in the existing plans for LESS data?
People are going to BLOW through 300MB with 3G Edge.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Here we go again with a made in Toronto price that will stick it to everyone in Canada.
Solution: get the phone directly from Apple, or online. Then go to Ebay and get the unlock code for 1.00, which enables you to put any sim card in it. Then you can subscribe to any phone service you wish.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:13 pm
This is not a solution. It is a step, and an obvious backpedal on the part of Rogers (thanks in part to this site and others like it). We still need an unlimited data plan for the device to be in any way useful.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:28 pm
I wish it were so simple. When the $20 value package of unlimited ‘mobile’ access was announced in February, I signed up right away. For months I was using it with my unlock iPhone. Now Fido has starting blocking access (actually, charging as if I wasn’t on a plan) for my device, since it is not an OFFICIALLY supported device. This is not based on the SIM card, it’s now right down to the level of IMEI number so that they can determine that I’m not using one of ‘their’ phones.
I haven’t tried the Blackberry data option, I was with the mobile internet package, so maybe I still have hope. I agree with the initial poster of this article that 300 MB would be fine for me since I am using in a WiFi area.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:32 pm
It’s still a terrible plan and you’ll still have to pay extra for caller ID. The plans that were previously announced are the ‘high value’ plans so that is pretty much the best you are going to get. $30 for 300 MB plus a voice plan and caller ID and all that extra stuff is still a huge ripoff.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Change the 300MB to unlimited and they have a customer! Isn’t Bell offering $30 for unlimited data? Why can’t Rogers?
July 1st, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Amanda you caved alright, shouldn’t have! We are all clearly Apple fans and should stand together on this, which I believe we will (the odd one will undoubtedly cave, hey its a great product!) Lets not forget that if you download one application alone that could take up your 300mb allowance right there. Rogers is deplorable to say the least! They need to feel the pinch!
July 1st, 2008 at 12:48 pm
http://www.canadaiphonetalk.com/ reports that Rogers does not have exclusive rights to the iPhone in Canada and a new carrier may be able to offer the iPhone in the near future.
July 1st, 2008 at 12:51 pm
I do not think that is fair. For iPhone, unlimited data is a must. Telus and Bell can offer unlimited data for $30 (CAD). Why not from Rogers??
July 1st, 2008 at 1:21 pm
$30 for 300MB is still completely ridiculous, however, it does seem like a short term solution.
If what Rogers is saying is true about being able to use the iphone on pretty much any existing Rogers plan, then at least people will be able to afford to use the iphone as an actual phone. People still won’t be able to afford heavy amounts of data usage for now, but hopefully we will get the flexibility to change our rate plans during our (somewhat enormous) 3 year contract. If data prices eventually come down (what with the spectrum auction and all), maybe iphone users will be able to switch their plans in the future?
This by no means is a solution by Rogers. We still live in a country where there is minimal wireless competition and THAT NEEDS to change. However, it seems as though iphones may be in reach of some!
July 1st, 2008 at 1:46 pm
It should be $10-15/GB not $10/100MB
July 1st, 2008 at 2:20 pm
$30 for 300MB isn’t a solution. It’s an extremely high price per MB unless they’re giving a lot of voice minutes along with it.
July 1st, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Absolutely not!
$30 for 300MB, ie. $100/GB is still ridiculously expensive!
July 1st, 2008 at 2:39 pm
The new non-iPhone data plans (including the flex plans) can be used on any device. It was also mentioned you can use any voice and data plans with the 3G iPhone.
July 1st, 2008 at 4:25 pm
are you caving to these terrible plans? Come on is this not a push for unlimited? 300mb for 30 is not good. yes if you are by wifi most of the time you probably wont go over. so people say but nobody has used an iphone with 3G yet. We don’t want to look at the plans and say “thats a good deal” not oh i guess we are not getting ripped off quite so bad. Its appeasement that has got us into this mess in the first place.
July 1st, 2008 at 4:46 pm
A $30 300MB data plan is just as bad if not worse than what they are offering. Really this is sad. They are attempting to cause some consumer confusion. This is why they insist on adding on fees after the fact, instead of giving you a direct out the door price.
$30 “Black Berry Data Plan” – 300MB
$6 “Text Message Plan” – 125 Text Messages
$7 “Voicemail” – Who knows if that includes visual voicemail?
$25 “Mega Time 25″ – 100 weekday minutes – 1000 evening & weekend minutes)
Total before all the add on fees ($68 per month).
Basically these “other plans” are worse when you start adding in the basics. Really sad that Rogers is trying to confuse people, and offering worse solutions!
July 1st, 2008 at 5:24 pm
I agree with all of the comments that were made after my earlier posting. It would be a shame if people were to compromise on a plan that ‘isn’t as terrible’ under ‘certain circumstances.’
I think, come July 11, every existing Rogers or Fido customer should call the retention department and argue as long as possible for an unlimited plan and make it clear that if Rogers/Fido doesn’t offer it we are leaving first chance we get.
In fact, this would be an interesting campaign to try to start. I wonder if it could gain media attention. Headline: “Not everyone so happy about iPhone release – angry Rogers/Fido customers plan to tie up company phone lines to protest high rate plans.”
What do people think about making July 11th famous for Rogers/Fido clients finally shouting “Enough!” Come on…let’s rain on their parade. There’s no better time to try to publicize their criminally high rate plans!
July 1st, 2008 at 5:33 pm
This won’t get you an iPhone, but it got me SATISFACTION!
I called Telus and told them I wanted to move from Rogers after waiting so long for their iPhone plan only to be presented with a ripoff. They asked what my needs were and to make a long story short, here is what I got on a 2 year plan @ $45/month:
– HTC Touch Phone
– 250 minutes
– Unlimited Internet
– Free Incoming Calls
– 200 Text Messages
– 25 Voice Mails
– Caller ID
– Call Waiting
July 1st, 2008 at 5:41 pm
People! Please keep going and don’t be satisfied with just getting them to change what they were planning to do. These people need to be stopped and they need to be put in their place …not just for this stupid rape attempt, but for everything else they are doing, have done and will continue to do unless they are mandated to fix their monopolistic ways through some form of legislation or through more competition …or if not by that, by shame and a huge loss of customers.
Let them off the hook now and they will just do the same thing next week, next month or next year! $1100 dollar cancellation charge. Are they serious??? Why do we put up with this crap here in Canada???
I am currently in the process of setting myself up for OTA HDTV recception and as soon as I get it working well I am cancelling their asses!
Don’t run out and sign up for this thing day one …no matter how good the iPhone is, it is definitely ruined when paired with Rogers!
July 1st, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Wow, why are people beginning to acknowledge Roger’s “existing plans” policy. If you’re going to acknowledge the use of those plans and data add-ons what’s the point of this petition?
If you really think 400MB let alone 400MB of data is “worry-free” for the iPhone you are kidding yourself. Many of you clearly don’t understand what the problem is. It’s not the fact that these plans are not affordable, its the fact we are getting gouged on voice and data plans. Don’t listen to their PR BS mentioning these existing plans! These are NOT high value plans!
Do not buy an iPhone come July 11th, with or without the iPhone plans!
July 1st, 2008 at 6:19 pm
To answer the question… it’s not a solution. It’s not even really a step in the right direction. Rogers has tried to make us dizzy with the latest “offerings”, but has not really moved an inch (more choice yes… but less value).
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:15 am
We definitely need to keep the momentum up and have the rogers stores empty on the 11th. Tell everyone you know not to buy and cell services on the 11th. Forget the iPhone… lets make July 11th NO ROGERS WIRELESS SALES day!
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:22 am
We need to realize that even adding a $30 Data plan to an existing phone plan.. even the CHEAPEST phone plan (mine being $10 a month right now for 250 DT mins unlimited evenings and weekends starting at 6) still only gives us 300 mb’s (now less then the lowest iphone plan) and requires the $20 value pack to get the features. BUT you are now WITHOUT visual voicemail. And who knows mow much extra that would be if even made unavailable. Not to mention, Since I have attempted 3 times and have not gotten a striaght answer from them, we need to consider the possability that “free wifi from rogers hotspots” is there way of saying they have BLOCKED the phone from being able to access any wifi or wireless connection unless it is from rogers! I live in Manitoba and we dont even have rogers internet here. And lets not foger roaming if anyone wishes to cross into the boarder into the US. Rogers has posted on their site that roaming data charges are now $2 per MB. So high that even THEY have recomending turning off your data roaming when leaving Canada…
Here is an email I wrote to them of recent which pretty much sums up my feelings on the situation:
************
Your terms and conditions that you’ve updated for the iPhone actually
make a RECOMENDATION to turn off Data roaming when leaving Canada cause the fees are so high. THIS IS A DATA DEVICE!! For christ sakes its has a brand new BUILT IN GSM specifically made for helping people find there way around when away from home.. what is the point of selling this phone if you can’t meet the requirements of running it?? AT&T INCLUDED 5GB of roaming in Canada with there unlimited data plan which is more then twice as much as you include in your most expensive plan… and their’s is half that price!! the first paragraph in your business Conduct guidelines posted online is:
The Rogers Group of Companies is firmly committed to maintaining its long-standing reputation for the highest standards of integrity, ethical behaviour and good corporate citizenship. It is a reputation each of you has helped to build and for which we can all be very proud.
How can you POSSIBLY say your living up to this with what you are doing with the iPhone? Please tell me, I would like to know. How can your company be this ignorant, how can it have gone so far into over pricings your customers that even YOU are recomending not usuing the services?? I hope for my sake and your, you guys make changes and quick. I have always enjoyed your company and have always tried to defend my cell phone provider.. but this is just to much.
**************
They have literally made it impossible to enjoy the device to its full capacity which is such a horrible thing because I can tell you from a little experience, it really is such an amazing, fun, and revolutionary product.
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:29 am
Hey guys, I’m the original Amanda whose comment was quoted in the body of this blog post. I’m concerned that some people took what I said rather out of context. So I’d like to clear up a few confusions here, if I may.
1. I am very UNsatisfied with having to pay $30/300MB each month for my smartphone data – I think it’s a big ripoff. But as an [unlocked/jailbroken] iPhone user I have no choice: only Rogers provides nationwide GSM+data coverage in Canada. I really hate being boxed in by a quasi-monopoly like this!
2. The only reason I expressed satisfaction about my phone call to Rogers yesterday is that my new $30/300MB smartphone data plan has a 50% higher data-cap for 70% less money than I was paying beforehand. In February, when I last called Rogers about data plans, their best plan available was $100/200MB – OUCH!
3. I think all current Rogers data plans are ripoffs – for iPhones, BlackBerrys, etc. (Note: “The Great Rogers Smartphone Data Plan Ripoff” may also be the prime suspect in the puzzle of why the iPhone wasn’t launched earlier in Canada…)
4. I agree: $30/unlimited *would* be an attractive, fair plan.
Let’s all keep up the fight for *fair* data plan prices. Let’s all keep asking why we are getting ripped off in Canada. There’s no plausible technical reason for the uppity Rogers prices. Keep up the consumer pressure!
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:55 am
As someone who was intent on getting an iphone on launch day along with Apple`s mobileme service 300mb for $30 is a slap in the face! I can easily burn through that in week (and thats being ultra conservative!) On a side note I`ve decide to start my exodus away from Robbers, no more ISP, cable on it`s way out and will be switching to Sat, When other carriers open up the market I`m jumping ship.
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:55 am
here is a thought…AT&T will be selling iphones contract free for 599…what if…you go to rogers..buy the phone 199 and then cancel it 400…so it will cost 599…prob a bit more…for the actual month you use…taxes…yari yari..etc..but hey are they gonna “brick’ it again? so lets say about 650 buks..but then you are contract free…and choose any plan you want!!….
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:42 pm
This is not a solution – unlimited data is a MUST! With all the new apps coming, plus GPS functionality (google maps) – it is not realistic to estimate data usage based on experience with original iphone. Before Fido was bought by Rogers they had a $20 unlimited data plan for the Hiptop and a $50 unlimited data plan for any other device (phone, pcmcia card, etc.). There really is no reason for Rogers not to be able to offer a reasonably priced unlimited data plan. Especially when most likely it will be the 80/20 rule – where 80% will never use that much data… but for the sake of providing customers with a pricing plan that can be anticipated and budgeted for rather than a monthly blank cheque – Rogers really is missing an opportunity.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Grow up people. If you can’t afford something, don’t buy. What gives you the right to put down any company because their rates are outside your price range.
Why is Rogers the exclusive carrier? Because their the only 3G network in Canada. Take it or leave, but don’t whine about it.
If you don’t want an iPhone plan, don’t get one, there’s lots of other voice & data plans out there.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
How EXACTLY is this a solution???
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:51 pm
FTW
Jesse (JFx)
“i just changed from rogers to bell… Very Happy … no more 200$+ phone bills .. I’m a major apple supporter. but Be realistic… i want a phone plan… Not car insurance.. …”
July 2nd, 2008 at 4:03 pm
@Rory I can guarantee you 100% that they are not able to block access to WIFI. The WIFI radio is built into the iPhone and disabling it or restricting it would require custom software. Which Apple would absolutely and unequivocally not allow in a million years.
Did I mention that Apple would never allow that no way no how? There will be no custom Rogers (or any other carrier) software on the iPhone.
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:16 pm
@Rory, your AT&T fact is rather hilarious… any American travelling to Canada with an iPhone is allowed MORE data on our networks (using Rogers’ own wireless infrastructure) than any Canadian customer.
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Thanks a Ton for Clerifying that for me Dan.. I was actually really worried about that.
July 3rd, 2008 at 12:52 am
It’s really quite simple: DON’T BUY IT! If you don’t like the plans then don’t sign up for one. It’s the old saying: a fool and his money are soon parted.
July 3rd, 2008 at 4:20 am
Ladies and Gents,
This is from me and my boyfriend.
While we were passing through Dubai we looked at some phones at duty free shop. We were amazed. I than understood why incoming calls in Afghanistan were not billed for…think third world country.
Ever since than for about two years maybe a little less now we have the ultra edition SGH-u600.We bought these in Dubai they were about 300CDN dollars each at the time. They came each with a tiny bluetooth head set for free as bonus. The international warranty came at no extra price.
Overseas websites will sell SIM FREE cells.
If there is no AnswerMachine installed, chances are the software is on the net.
GSM is great if you like to have an up to date cell phone all times with no strings attached once your contract expires…i’m on month to month now. All you do is buy new cell and swap the SIM. But you pay the full price of the GSM Cell from the reseller.
The cell is not subsidized, which is great, one can get whatever cell they want. It has to be GSM, verses what is subsidized is usually locked, than locked into a contract than you get shafted. Than a little dictator somewhere tells you what kind of ancient junk you have to buy and that answering machines on cell phones do not exist.
Some settings on cell may need to be changed to get mms, internet,it is a simple procedure. If you saved these settings to the SIM, swap cards and you are ready to play.
We canceled the voice mail. Together we save $14 monthly.
The answering machine on the cell phone works well. It picks up calls we do not answer. Unlimited number of voice messages.
We did cancel Caller Id. It was not worth the price, it should be at no charge.
I like GSM providers reason is because I can buy any GSM cell, insert the SIM and cell works. No fine print to worry about. You can buy one for each day of the week if you wish to do so. I do not like the CDN GSM providers as they are a great big rip off.
I find that our GSM providers are the lesser of other Evil providers we have. Reason for this is the great cell phone portability and outstanding features just buy it overseas and not here.
A great majority of other countries did not hear of charges for incoming phone calls and very many of these originate in Africa.
“SIM FREE” That’s how the phone came out of their respective Factories. It was never locked.
Before you buy an iPhone please look into how the battery is swapped
Than: Ask yourself if such a method is appropriate for this time and age.
Lets say that If only 28 thousand people disposed with the voice mail, on the average it would save the masses about $2352000$ in one year at 7 bucks a pop. It would hit the big guys in the pocket book. Imagine what a greater number would do, it would be excellent to see 75% of clients to do that, and no one should buy the iPhone till things change.
And Who really needs Caller ID?
As a couple we save approximately 250+ without paid for voice mail and caller id.
Hitting in the pocket book is the only way we may stand a chance. Its all they understand. Complaints and letters are great idea but they will not do anything. Minimize your spending than we may have a chance and it needs to be done in numbers, as all they understand is money. Keep the momentum and spread the news it is the best thing we can do to have everyone cut their cell spending. Even by 7 bucks could make a difference if enough people do it.
Stay away from CDMA…google this and it should be self explanatory.
Kind Regards,
Another Unhappy CDN Cell Market Customer
July 3rd, 2008 at 7:19 am
Remember, cell phones (yes including the iPhone) are a luxury, not a right. Where’s the petition for lowering gas prices? Where’s the petition for lowering food prices? I think you need to reevaluate your value systems.
July 3rd, 2008 at 8:06 am
Question… could you buy the iphone from Apple put in your old SIM CARD, from say Telus and still be able to surf the net if WIFI is available??
July 3rd, 2008 at 11:39 am
Bell just announce the Samsung instinct release (there version of the iPhone). Available on 0, 1, 2, and 3 year contracts. $20 voice plan with the option of $10 UNLIMITED DATA. Rogers excuss for the Canadian market not being in the position to support Unlimited data is just simple a lie. Bell is offering it for $10 a month.. we would be more then fine with $30 a month.. This needs to happen or them loosing customers is a reality. I’m not sure if anyone has looked at the Instict, but it is pretty sweet.
July 3rd, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Another solution is the following: buy a hacked iphone (first generation, not 3G) on Craigslist for about 400$ (16G version). They will be even less once G3 come on the secondary market. Use your existing rogers account (if the phone is not unlocked, use i.unlock.no, simple). Use wifi for all data applications: it is way faster anyway. As soon as there is a viable alternative, switch from the Rogers voice plan as well.
Or do the same with a G3 phone from apple, not Rogers, but make sure before you buy it that it can be hacked easily (check the same website I mentioned above).
July 3rd, 2008 at 3:40 pm
I would like to respectfully suggest to those who have commented here that a cell phone is a luxury or made comments along the lines of “If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it” that you are missing the point of this petition.
First, it should be noted that there is a segment of the population for whom a cell phone has become as much a business necessary as a regular phone. For mobile sales people, it is even more necessary than a land line. Data as well has become a critical business advantage (possibly, again, even a necessity) for many people. So please don’t display you ignorance of where business is at today by describing this as simply a ‘luxury.’
While it is true that we should all buy within our means, do you really believe that that is a reasonable argument to make against a petition that is seeking to address outrageous pricing by an existing monopoly? (Don’t argue it’s not because there are other cell providers…currently Rogers holds a monopoly on GSM service. Not only that, but it’s ability to set prices unreasonably high, encourages other Canadian cell providers to do the same.)
To all of you that are arguing against this petition, ask yourself, what is your motivation? What compels you to support a monopoly that has had a long history of insanely high prices instead of supporting the individuals seeking to voice their criticism of the situation.
July 3rd, 2008 at 3:55 pm
@ Rory:
You forget that the Instinct doesn’t display web pages natively like the iphone does. The Instinct only displays those watered down mobile pages, hence using less data. They only call it “unlimited” because it looks better then $10 for 100MB or 200MB or whatever (bottom line, you wouldn’t use as much data with an Instinct as you would an iphone). Same with Telus and their HTC Touch. Bell also charges extra for GPS and access to their music store, features of which are included on the iphone.
All I’m trying to say is $10/mo is certainly cheap, but its a bit like comparing apples to oranges…no pun intended
July 3rd, 2008 at 4:02 pm
WOW this is sad… Blackberry who is a canadian business has the same amount for plans… if you look at the add on plans for the same amount of data and voice you are getting with the iphone plans… with the 150 min and unli evening s and weekends plus the 30 300mb add on it works out to 60 and with the 60 iphone package you get more data….
The reason BELL AND TELUS can offer unlim data packages is because THEY ARE ON CDMA network and it is slow as dial up internet… LMAO… if you want fast, current network with excellent reception and customer service you wont be dissappointed with the iphone packages….
people that want the iphone want it for all the fetures and for the stature that comes with having it. they will pay and a little stupid petetion wont stop them! good try tho!
July 3rd, 2008 at 5:01 pm
This is a better answer:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080703.wgtinstinct0703/BNStory/Technology
Snips:
“… Like Rogers, Bell Mobility offers a variety of voice plans, but asks $10 a month for the unlimited data plan, applicable to the Instuinct alone.”
” … The plan includes unlimited Web browsing and Internet e-mail (including Hotmail and Gmail accounts), as well as attachments ”
This is exactly what iPhone users need to use the device the way it was intended, it just looks like in Canada it will be with Bell and a Samsung Instinct instead
July 3rd, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Bell & Telus do use a CDMA famly network, but they now offer EV-DO data service, which is far faster then the original PCS & 1x networks.
Don’t confuse the original base standards with today’s newer enhancements.
Technically the iPhone uses UMTS for 3g connectivity and HSDPA/HSUPA for data, not GSM, but they are all from the GSM * family *, the same way that EV-DO, et al are from the CDMA family, but are far superior to the originals in the same way UMTS & HS D/UPA are better then the original GSM & GPRS
July 3rd, 2008 at 7:10 pm
@Even.. thanks for undermining me.. JERK!! haha just kidding bro.. thanks for the update I was actually not aware of eaither of those facts.. I think what I was getting at is there are other alternatives to the iPhone that are really good products and don’t have the restrictions rogers does.. and the major upside to this is for what ever levels it is.. Unlimited data HAS come north of the border… and that can only be good for us. In all honesty I want an iPhone… I have for a year and no matter what it takes it will be my next phone.. I just took this as great news cause the simple principal of this is Unlimited Data is hear.. Rogers can’t ride on the iPhone forever, and eventually they will have to offer unlimited data to compete with telus and bell on all the smart phone that are common between all 3 companies.. ie) Blackberry, HTC, etc. And unless they are prepared to publically admit they are running a monopoly, this plan will have to apply to the iPhone as well. I think, thanks to bell ironically, an iPhone that can run with the freedom we are all looking for is in our near future.!! Would you agree??
Thanks Even.

To those who complain this is a stupid site in comparison to problems such as oil prices and world hunger, I promise you the people in here protesting the monopoly of rogers are the same youth who protest the very things you speak of.. although your right, those issues are much more important then cell phones will ever be, the principals of this remain the same.. Corporations that have become so large that basic humanity comes second to profit. These are the corporations that discover new treasures or technologies and condone whatever collateral damage is necessary to maximize their profit… It’s a corporate version of a gateway drug. Every ignorance against people deserves to be address in this fashion, big or small. Please don’t assume that the people on this blog demanding better cell service for their country put their toys before every other travesty in this world. That in itself is judgmental and ignorant.
The fact is, people who want whats best for everyone around them, want the same in all aspects, weather its cell phones or people dieing for control of Middle Eastern oil fields.
I’m proud of anyone who fights for what they believe in.. big or small.
Keep petitioning guys!!!
July 3rd, 2008 at 7:37 pm
this is now offered on the rogers site!
While the iPhone 3G Voice and Data Packages allow you to use this device to its fullest and offer savings over separate voice and data plans, they are not the only options available to you. Other pricing options are available. For example, you may choose to combine one of our new data plans ranging from $30 per month (for 300MB) to $100 per month (for 6GB) with a voice plan. Learn More. They are available by calling 1 888 ROGERS1 or by visiting your nearest Rogers retail location.
Already an existing customer?
If you are an existing customer, you may keep your existing voice service plan and add a separate data plan. To check your upgrade eligibility, please call 1 888 ROGERS1 or visit your nearest Rogers retail location.

Adam wrote:”Remember, cell phones (yes including the iPhone) are a luxury, not a right. Where’s the petition for lowering gas prices? Where’s the petition for lowering food prices? I think you need to reevaluate your value systems.”
Cell frequency bandwidth is extremely limited commodity. It’s more rare and expensive than gold or oil.
Can you imagine to give up royalty rights for Alberta oil to one oil company?
Basically it’s not Rogers’s fault. They just act as junkies: steal a car (bandwith) to buy crystal meth.
I hope “IPhone” overdose just choke them up.
Government failed on this market. Period.
July 4th, 2008 at 9:43 am
@Jeremy
So anyone who disagrees with your whining is automatically labeled ignorant? A very childish concept to say the least.
Anyone who uses their mobile device for business, that mobile device and its data plan are most often provided for by their Employer (if its not, you’re working for the wrong company). So where is your argument that the rates are too high for YOU?
Cellphones are by no means a necessity for life, so yes my friend, they are a luxury.
July 4th, 2008 at 10:13 am
@ Evan:
The Samsung Instinct does in fact display full HTML pages just like the iPhone does (without flash, just like the iPhone). But the Instinct gives you the option to switch between mobile sites and full HTML.

@Megan
“THEY ARE ON CDMA network and it is slow as dial up internet…”
That is not entirely true. Sure the first generation was slow, but the Instinct runs on the EVDO Rev A system which runs up to 3.1Mbps. Compare that to the earlier iPhones running on EDGE at around 384Kbps. The new iPhones do of course run on the UMTS standard (2Mbps) but also with the enhanced HSDPA standard (14.4Mbps)
So yes, the Instinct has a lower bandwidth then the new 3G iphones, but it’s still a lot faster then 56Kbps dial up modems.

Its awesome everyone is getting together on here to protest this. 35,000++!
My question is this.
Written petitions are a start but when will an actual protest be organized? From speaking to people from other countries, we as canadians put up with WAY to much, ($1.50++ gas prices) with out any form of public protest. Sure people complain, but until people organize a public protest will anything actually change? Doubtful.
In case someone is interested in a (peaceful) protest that would certainly generate results heres the addresss of Rogers head office (correct me if im mistaken):
Name: Rogers Communications Inc, Corporate Head Office
Street: 333 Bloor Street East
Toronto, on M4W1G9-
Phone: (416) 935-7777

Hey guys,
i have texted everyone who were interested in the iPhone and told them about this website.
secondly,
THIS IS MY REQUEST TO EVERYONE!!!!!
DONT BUY THE iPHONE Just YET!!!
Rogers need to get this straight. They think that people will buy no matter what the prices are… but we need to show them that this will not work this time and this can only happen if we dont buy the iphone…. if a lot of people dont buy the iphone, they will be forced to lower the prices !!!
So please dont buy it right away!!!!!!

Sorry but most of you folks have no clue what you’re talking about.
$30 for 300Mb is amazing value when compared with previous rates which were absolutely insanely expensive.
The advent of VOIP over wi-fi (if you’re sure you have open wi-fi) will destroy carriers like Rogers and it will be folks that live outside of cities that will suffer with reduced wireless infrastructure as the carriers lose money. (No accident BCE is selling out perhaps).
BTW if you’re Canadian why not be patriotic and buy a BlackBerry. They employ thousands of people in Canada; have generally better devices than the iPhone, and don’t resort to “exclusive” deals with carriers in order to screw the public.
You can buy a wi-fi phone from their website and maybe even use VOIP and wireless access points if you want to avoid charges.

Rogers obviously won’t admit that they don’t have the adequate infrastructure to handle the unlimited data for a reasonable price and still provide decent speed, so the solution is to create a ridiculous plan so people stay away from the iPhone all together until they can get their act together. Look how long it took to even release the iPhone… they do NOT have the proper people to make things happen efficiently or effectively so why should we expect great things to come from a such a lame hog.
Apple is doing great things, and this is just the beginning, so if they half a brain they would create an amazing package right out of the gate instead of rudely slamming the door in many potential new customers faces.

I prefer the 300MB blackberry plan over the iphone plan. I got my5, 250 daytime, unlimited eve/weekend, 500 text, call display, 300 MB for about 62$
the iphone plan is $60, with no my5, no call display, and only 75 text. I don’t have visual voice mail, but I didn’t want it anyway, as for the 100 MB less data, I’ll have to learn to get by on 300.
I still think the pricing is unfair, but sharing a network with a bunch of people who are non stop downloading is no fun either. As far as people “calling bullshit” on this, I assure you that it is for real, but your going to have to sign up and bring your own iphone. Rogers is not going to sell you one on any plan but their iphone plan.

There’s hope. The Samsung Instinct is coming Aug 8th. http://gizmodo.com/374454/sprints-samsung-instinct-at-last-a-decent-iphone-competitor. It would be a great protest. I spoke with Bell. They will have $10 unlimited data packages. (Though I’m sure there’s a catch).
I say screw Rogers, if they won’t be reasonable. I wrote them & they told me how wonder ful their packages were.
If everyone holds out until August, Rogers will have to come down.

@Adam
“Anyone who uses their mobile device for business, that mobile device and its data plan are most often provided for by their Employer (if its not, you’re working for the wrong company). So where is your argument that the rates are too high for YOU?”
“Cellphones are by no means a necessity for life, so yes my friend, they are a luxury.”
Your still missing the BIG Picture. the RATES ARE TOO HIGH. Is this too hard to comprehend? It doesnt matter who is paying for them. For the average person they are insane. Why should only the Rich be able to get these things?
For the corporate places paying for there employees to have these phones. STILL COSTS THEM TOOO MUCH. do you think these costs are not absorbed by the public in the end? they will all roll the operating costs into whatever product/service they offer. Perhaps if it costs a company $50 less a person other costs will go down.
on the original note. this is not a Solution. PPL need to actually take a stand. the problem is there will be many ppl that will just break down and say they are not great but they will do for now. WE need to Stand up as ONE and all NOT get this phone. leave rogers with a full stock of them.
And for those that do jump on this bandwagon. Please keep in mind you basically waive all rights to bitch and complain later when you see your overage costs. YOU WERE WARNED. now pay the price.
